Start with a brake inspection when the cause is unclear

A brake inspection examines the system and records findings. Ask for an explanation of any measured wear or defect and the recommended work. An inspection fee does not mean replacement parts are included.

Front and rear pads, discs and pads

Front brake pads and rear brake pads are separate service choices. Front discs and pads or rear discs and pads include a different set of parts. Confirm the vehicle's brake specification, the axle covered, and whether required sensors and fitting items are in the price.

Brake fluid replacement

Brake fluid replacement concerns the hydraulic system. It is separate from friction-part replacement and should use the correct specification and procedure for the vehicle. Ask the garage to check the maintenance record rather than infer that fluid was renewed when pads were fitted.

Calipers, pipes and parking brakes

Brake caliper work should identify the affected position. Brake pipe repairs need the exact pipe or section agreed. Parking-brake work may concern a cable, mechanism or electronic system; describe the symptom rather than booking a guessed part.

Before collecting your car

Ask what was replaced, whether other defects remain and whether there are bedding-in instructions for the fitted parts. Keep the invoice and inspection findings together. The garage should explain any limitations before you drive away.

How much do brake pads and discs cost?

Request a quote for your registration and the affected axle. Compare the parts specification, labour, wear sensors and any additional work. A price for front pads alone is not comparable with pads and discs on both axles.

Do I need new discs every time I change pads?

Ask for the inspection findings and the manufacturer's wear limits. The decision should reflect the condition of the braking components rather than an automatic package upgrade.

Why are my brakes squealing or grinding?

A noise needs inspection before a repair can be priced reliably. Tell the garage whether it happens while braking, turning or moving slowly. If braking is reduced or the car feels unsafe, arrange assistance instead of driving it in.

Can I replace just one brake pad?

Ask the workshop to explain the required replacement set and procedure for your vehicle. Do not select individual components solely to lower the bill without understanding how the work affects braking.

Is a brake inspection the same as replacing brake fluid?

No. Confirm whether the appointment is an inspection, a fluid replacement or a component repair. They are different jobs and should be clear in the quoted scope.
