Windscreens, lights, mirrors and wipers
Information for drivers in England.
Describe the damaged or faulty item precisely: windscreen, side glass, mirror, lamp or washer. The right service depends on the component and the equipment fitted to the car. Do not continue a journey if you cannot see the road adequately.
Quick answer
Identify the exact glass, mirror, lamp or washer problem before booking. Confirm the required equipment and any associated calibration or fitting work.
- Identify the exact glass, mirror or lamp.
- Confirm equipment and calibration requirements.
- Follow the repairer's collection instructions.
Glass
Have chips, cracks and camera-related requirements assessed.
Lighting
Confirm the correct lamp or bulb specification for the vehicle.
Wipers and washers
Check the clearing of the screen and investigate poor performance.
Windscreen chips and replacement glass
A windscreen chip needs assessment to decide whether repair is suitable. Windscreen replacement is a separate job; confirm the glass specification and any camera-related requirements. Side-glass replacement should identify the window and whether associated fittings are damaged.
Mirror replacement
Check whether the booking covers mirror glass or the complete assembly. Heating, adjustment, folding and camera functions can affect the required part. Tell the garage which functions stopped working after the damage.
Bulbs, headlamps and beam alignment
A bulb replacement is different from replacing a headlamp unit. Headlamp-aim adjustment is another distinct service. Confirm which side and lighting technology are involved, and whether diagnosis or configuration is needed for the model.
Wipers and washers
Wiper replacement should specify front, rear or both. Washer-system work may involve diagnosis of the pump, pipes or jets. Explain whether there is no spray, weak spray or a leak so the garage can assess the correct system.
Ask about use after the repair
After glass work, follow the repairer's instructions on when the vehicle can be driven and any care needed. Ask for confirmation of required calibration work and report any warning messages that remain.
Can a windscreen chip be repaired instead of replaced?
Ask a glass specialist to assess its size, location and condition. Tell them about cameras or sensors mounted around the screen. Do not assume every small chip is repairable.
Does a replacement windscreen need camera calibration?
Ask whether the manufacturer's procedure requires it and whether it is included. Request confirmation of the completed work rather than assuming a glass replacement also covers every associated check.
Can I fit brighter bulbs to improve visibility?
Confirm approved compatibility, beam pattern and the vehicle's requirements before changing lamps. A product being sold online does not establish that it is suitable for your lights or legal for road use.
Why are my wipers still smearing after replacement?
Describe the problem and ask the workshop to check the screen, blades and operation. Replacing the same part repeatedly without inspection may miss the cause.
Is driving with poor visibility acceptable for a short trip?
Do not start a journey if you cannot see adequately through the screen. Clear the obstruction and get help if the heating, washers or wipers cannot restore safe visibility.
