Choosing a garage: types, skills and services
Information for drivers in England.
Start by asking whether the garage works on your type of vehicle and can do the job you need. Check the services at the branch you plan to visit, then compare what is included in the price.

Independent garages
Some independent garages handle a wide range of repairs; others specialise in particular vehicles. Ask whether they have experience with your model and the work you need.
Franchised dealerships
A franchised dealership operates within a manufacturer's dealer network. Confirm the relevant brand relationship and workshop service at the actual branch. A dealership label does not mean every type of repair is carried out on site.
Specialist repairers
A specialist may focus on a make, powertrain, component or particular repair. Ask what the specialism covers and whether the workshop has experience with your model and fault.
Bodyshops
A bodyshop focuses on body and paint work. Ask about the damage assessment, repair process and any associated work such as glass, alignment or calibration. Establish which work is carried out by that business.
Tyre centres
A tyre centre may provide tyres, balancing and alignment, with other services varying by branch. Confirm the tyre specification and appointment scope before selecting a fitting service.
Mobile operators
A mobile operator brings suitable services to an agreed location. Check access, working-space requirements and whether the job can be completed there. Some work needs workshop facilities or separate recovery.
What about a private chain?
A chain describes how several branches are organised. A chain location can still be an independent garage or tyre centre. Compare the actual branch's services, availability and terms rather than assuming all branches are identical.
Three useful questions
Can this branch do this exact job on my vehicle? What work and parts does the price include? What happens if the inspection finds something else?
If accreditation matters to you, verify it with the relevant organisation. The Motor Ombudsman's code describes commitments made by subscribing businesses; our explanation does not assert that every garage is accredited.
How do I compare garage quotes fairly?
Give each garage the same vehicle details and explain the problem. Ask for a written quote showing the work, parts, labour and tax, plus anything excluded. Check when the car is likely to be ready as well as the total price.
Should I choose the closest garage?
A nearby garage is convenient, but first check that it can do the work your car needs. Some tests and repairs need specialist equipment or experience.
How can I check a garage's accreditation?
Use the accrediting organisation's own directory and confirm the actual branch. A logo, chain name or catalogue entry is not enough on its own.
Can I ask for a second opinion?
Yes. Obtain the original findings and ask the second workshop for its own assessment. Agree any diagnostic charge, and arrange safe transport if the vehicle cannot be driven.
