Clutch, gearbox and drivetrain services
Information for drivers in England.
Use the symptom to start the conversation: slipping, difficult gear selection, vibration or a leak. Similar symptoms can have different causes. An agreed inspection helps distinguish a clutch problem from a gearbox, mounting or driveshaft issue.
Quick answer
Clutch, gearbox and drivetrain symptoms can have different causes. Confirm the diagnosis, transmission type and parts or fluids included in the service.
- Identify the actual transmission.
- Check whether the flywheel is included.
- Use the specified fluid and service requirements.
Clutch work
Confirm which clutch components and fitting items are included.
Gearbox work
Diagnosis, oil servicing and repair are different appointments.
Related parts
Ask whether flywheel or other work is included or needs separate approval.
Clutch and flywheel replacement
Clutch replacement and flywheel replacement are separate catalogue jobs. Confirm which components are included, whether a flywheel decision follows inspection, and whether required hydraulic parts are covered. Ask the garage to explain any additional work before it starts.
Manual and automatic gearbox work
Manual gearbox and automatic gearbox services need the exact transmission identified. Ask whether the appointment is an assessment, repair or replacement and what its price covers. A diagnostic booking should produce findings rather than a promise to cure every shifting problem.
Transmission fluid servicing
Use the specified fluid and service requirements for the actual transmission. ZF notes that intervals vary between transmission manufacturers. Confirm whether filters, seals and the appropriate filling procedure are included; a generic 'gearbox oil change' description may be insufficient.
Driveshafts and CV boots
A CV-boot replacement and a driveshaft replacement have different scopes. Ask which side is affected and whether the joint itself is serviceable. A damaged protective boot does not tell you, without inspection, what condition the enclosed joint is in.
Differential and transfer-case work
Differential and transfer-case investigations concern different drivetrain assemblies. Confirm which unit the garage will inspect and whether the service covers diagnosis, fluid work or a repair. Give the garage details of modifications or previous drivetrain work.
How do I know if the clutch needs replacing?
Describe slipping, difficulty selecting gears or changes in pedal feel. Ask for an assessment before authorising a clutch kit; the symptom alone does not establish the failed component.
Does a clutch quote include the flywheel?
Ask explicitly. The workshop may need to inspect related components before confirming the final scope. Agree how it will contact you and obtain approval if additional parts are recommended.
Is gearbox oil included in a normal service?
Check the checklist and the manufacturer's transmission schedule. A general service package should not be assumed to include a separate transmission-fluid job.
Can I book an automatic gearbox flush for any car?
Ask a transmission-capable workshop to confirm the correct procedure and fluid for your gearbox. Do not choose a flushing service solely because it is advertised for automatic vehicles.
What should I do if the gearbox will not select a gear?
Avoid forcing the controls or repeatedly trying to move the vehicle. Arrange assistance if it cannot be driven normally and describe the warning messages and circumstances to the workshop.
