Car servicing and scheduled maintenance
Information for drivers in England.
Choose maintenance from the vehicle's schedule and service history. The name of a package helps you browse, but its included work tells you what you are buying. Bring records of recent replacements so the garage can identify what is actually due.
Quick answer
Choose maintenance from your vehicle's schedule and service history. Compare the work included in a package, rather than relying on its name.
- Start with the vehicle's maintenance schedule.
- Compare replacements as well as inspections.
- Keep an itemised service record.
Schedule
Use the vehicle's time and mileage requirements.
Included work
Check which fluids and parts are replaced, not only inspected.
Service record
Keep an itemised invoice and confirm any history update.
Interim, Full, Major and manufacturer servicing
Interim, Full and Major Service are package names. Compare their checklists, including parts replaced and checks performed. Manufacturer-scheduled servicing follows the requirements for the particular vehicle; the name 'Full Service' alone does not establish that every scheduled item is included.
Oil and filters
An engine oil and filter change is a specific maintenance job. Check the oil specification and what the price includes. Engine air filters, cabin filters and fuel filters serve different systems; replacing one does not mean the others are included.
Ask whether a listed filter is being checked or replaced. A cabin filter concerns air entering the passenger compartment, while an engine air filter serves the engine intake.
Scheduled replacements outside a package
Spark plugs, coolant, auxiliary drive belts and differential oil may appear as separate scheduled jobs. Their relevance and timing depend on the vehicle. Do not assume that a belt replacement in one area includes the engine's timing belt.
If your maintenance reminder names a specific job, tell the garage. Confirm whether it is included in the selected package or must be booked separately.
Hybrid and electric vehicle servicing
A hybrid scheduled service and an electric vehicle scheduled service need checklists suited to their powertrains. Ask what is included for your model. A routine service is different from a specialist high-voltage battery assessment or charging-fault investigation.
What should I receive?
Keep an itemised record of the work, parts and fluids used. If a service-book entry or digital history update matters to you, check that the garage can provide it before booking. Agree any additional work and its price before it starts.
Do I have to use a main dealer to keep my warranty?
You can choose an independent garage for servicing. Keep evidence that the work followed the manufacturer's requirements. Warranty repairs, service plans and lease agreements can have their own conditions, so check the relevant documents before booking.
How often should I service a low-mileage car?
Check both the time and mileage limits in its maintenance schedule. Low mileage alone is not a reason to ignore a date-based requirement. Give the garage the last service date as well as the odometer reading.
What if I have missed a service?
Tell the garage when the last documented service took place. Ask it to identify overdue work from the vehicle's schedule rather than simply reset the reminder. Check any warranty or lease conditions affected by missing records.
Is a service history stamp enough?
Ask for an itemised record as well. It should make clear which maintenance was performed and which items were only inspected. Keep invoices for scheduled work done outside the routine service.
Can I supply my own oil or parts?
Ask before buying them. The garage needs to confirm the exact specification and whether it accepts customer-supplied items. Agree responsibility if a supplied part is wrong or faulty and record the arrangement on the booking.
Will the garage update my digital service history?
Confirm this before booking. Ask what record you will receive if the workshop cannot update the manufacturer's system. Do not assume that an invoice automatically appears in every digital history service.
