Can I drive without an MOT?

If an MOT is required and has expired, ordinary road use is not permitted. Limited exceptions include a pre-arranged test and journeys to or from repairs. The vehicle must still be roadworthy and properly insured.

Is there a grace period after my MOT expires?

No general grace period applies. Arrange the test before expiry rather than assuming that a booking lets you continue normal driving.

How far can I drive to a garage with no MOT?

There is no general mileage allowance in the published exception. The journey must genuinely qualify; do not treat it as permission for unrelated trips. Keep appointment evidence and arrange recovery if the vehicle is unsafe.

Can I park on the road with an expired MOT?

No. Plan lawful off-road storage and the test or repair arrangements. Check vehicle-tax obligations separately.

Can cameras detect or flag an expired MOT?

Police use ANPR information alongside vehicle checks in road enforcement, including MOT offences. That does not mean every camera issues an automatic MOT penalty. Keep the vehicle's status correct rather than relying on a particular detection method.

Do you get three points just for no MOT?

The ordinary no-MOT fixed penalty is non-endorsable, so it does not itself add points. Dangerous-condition and other driving offences are different and can carry points.

What is the fine for driving without an MOT?

GOV.UK states that driving without a valid MOT can attract a fine of up to £1,000. Other offences can have separate consequences.

What if the car failed because of a dangerous defect?

Do not drive it until repaired. GOV.UK lists a possible £2,500 fine, disqualification and three points for driving a vehicle that failed for a dangerous problem.

Does an expired MOT automatically cancel my insurance?

Check the policy and speak to the insurer about your circumstances. Do not assume either that all cover disappears or that cover permits unlawful driving. Insurance and the right to use the vehicle are separate questions.

What does the MOT expiry date tell me?

The expiry date tells you when the recorded certificate runs out. It is not a promise that the vehicle will remain roadworthy until then. Deal with faults when they arise rather than waiting for the next test.

If the status and date appear inconsistent, verify them with the official service before making plans. A checker showing no date does not prove an exemption.
