What does the test cover?

The inspection covers areas including brakes, steering, tyres, lights, visibility and relevant emissions checks. The precise requirements depend on the vehicle and its age. A tester follows the inspection manual rather than a garage's own service checklist.

Choosing your appointment

Have your registration and vehicle details ready. For a van, minibus, motor caravan or converted vehicle, ask the station to confirm its class before booking. A garage offering car MOTs does not necessarily test motorcycles or every commercial vehicle.

Check whether the appointment is a test slot or a vehicle drop-off time. If you need the vehicle back by a particular time, discuss this before making travel arrangements.

Give the tester access

Remove clutter that prevents access to seats, seatbelts or the boot. Bring any information the station has requested. Tell the garage about modifications or unusual starting procedures when you arrange the appointment.

Read the result, even after a pass

Ask the garage to explain findings you do not understand. A pass can still include minor defects or advisories. Keep the inspection result and any repair paperwork together so you can distinguish work already completed from items still needing attention.

Can I get an MOT at any garage?

No. Choose an approved MOT station that tests your vehicle class. A repair workshop is not automatically an MOT station; ask where the test will actually take place.

Can someone else take my car for its MOT?

Yes, provided they are insured to drive it. Give them the booking details and make sure the garage can contact you about any decisions.

How long does an MOT appointment take?

Ask the station for its expected test time and collection time. A drop-off booking may leave the car at the workshop for longer than the inspection itself. Repairs and a retest are separate work.

Does an MOT include an oil change or service?

No. Book maintenance separately and check the included work. An MOT appointment should not be taken to mean that fluids, filters or worn parts will be replaced.

Can I watch my MOT being carried out?

Ask the station about its viewing arrangements before arrival. Follow its safety instructions and do not enter the working area or distract the tester.

Will a cheap MOT be a different test?

Compare the appointment conditions and total charges, not just the headline price. Ask whether the offer requires another service and whether a retest would be charged separately.

Why is my MOT record missing from a checker?

First, check the registration you entered. A missing response does not establish that the vehicle has passed, failed or is exempt. Use the official MOT status service to check the record, and contact the test centre about a recent test if the information does not look right.
