An MOT and a service answer different questions. The MOT checks specified test requirements at the time of inspection. A service carries out the maintenance and checks in the agreed schedule or package. Many drivers arrange both visits together, but one does not replace the other.

What an MOT gives you
The tester follows the official inspection requirements for the vehicle. The result records whether it meets those requirements and any findings. It is not a complete assessment of every mechanical component.
What a service gives you
A service should have a clear checklist of inspections and replacements. Compare that checklist with the vehicle's maintenance schedule and history. A manufacturer's service schedule is tailored to the vehicle, so a package name alone is not enough to choose the work.
Examples of separate jobs
You may book an oil and filter change because it is due even when an MOT is not. Equally, you may need an MOT when the next scheduled service is not yet due. If a fault has appeared, describe it to the garage; neither a routine service nor a test automatically includes extended diagnosis.
Booking both together
Check that both services are selected, confirm the total and read any offer condition. If a discount applies to the MOT only when a particular service is booked, selecting the service by itself does not mean the MOT has been added.
Keep both records
Ask for the MOT result and an itemised service record. Those documents show different work. If further repairs were approved, keep that invoice too so the next garage can see what has already been completed.
Do I need a service if my car has passed its MOT?
Check the maintenance schedule. A pass is not a record of routine maintenance and does not replace work that is due by time or mileage.
Can I have my MOT and service at different garages?
Yes, you can arrange them separately. Keep both records and confirm appointment timing. Check whether separating the jobs changes any combined-booking offer.
Which should happen first: MOT or service?
Ask the garage how it schedules both jobs and how additional findings will be approved. The important point is that the agreed work, test and any retest are completed and recorded clearly.
Does a service guarantee an MOT pass?
No. Ask what the package covers and arrange any known concerns to be assessed. A service and an MOT have different scopes.
